    Troubleshooting Heat Press Machine Problems

    Occasionally something happens that slows down production. The following are troubleshooting tips from seasoned operators and others experienced in the heat press process.

    Problem: Why do I get a double image? (Ghosting)

    Solution:

    • Has the heat been set before printing?
    • Excessive temperature can cause ghosting (the "blow out" of inks in the gaseous state).
    • The fabric and transfer paper should simultaneously separate when they exit the heated drum.

    Problem: Why is the color printing differently from my design?

    Solution:

    • Are the temperature, pressure, and time settings accurately adjusted?
    • The suggested temperature is 3800 F. - 4100 F.
    • The recommended pressure is 0 - minimum psig.

    Stock Transfer Problems

    Typically all transfers may be applied to t-shirts, sweatshirts, leggings, bags, and similar garments and items. However, transfers specially made for printing on polyester caps or mugs are sublimation transfers.

    Before beginning, check the color/type of product code that indicates which surface the transfer can be applied to.

    To avoid problems using stock transfers, pre-press fabrics a min. of 5 - 7 seconds before printing.

    Problem: Why is the transfer wrinkling during the heat transfer process?

    Solution:

    • Do the fabric and transfer paper have evenly cut lead edges?
    • Align the fabric (only) on the machine and preset the tension.
    • Place the leading edge of the transfer paper (face down) on top of the fabric.
    • Apply downward pressure, making sure the transfer paper and fabric both follow the same path into the machine.
    • Set all unwind/rewind pneumatic tension controls to a maximum 3 - 5 psig.
    • Check the belt for rips or tears.

    Problem: Why isn’t the transfer adhering to the fabric?

    • Check/increase the heat, pressing time, and/or the amount of pressure.
    • If letters or the design lifts off when the liner is removed: Increase the pressure.
    • Make sure the transfer type is appropriate for the material it is going onto.
    • Examine the heating platen for warping or dirt.
    • Replace any defective bottom pad.
    • If a Teflon pad is being used, remove it.
    • Improper laundering can cause the transfer to fall off or disintegrate.

    Problem: Why isn’t my opaque transfer coming out opaque?

    Solution:

    • Check the temperature, pressure, and pressing time.
    • If the fabric is 100% cotton: Check/adjust the pressure and/or pressing time.
    • If the fabric is 50-50%: Reduce the temperature or decrease the application time.
    Specialty Transfers Problems

    Many sublimation heat press models do not provide enough pressure for the application of the screen printed plastisol transfers that we offer.

    Problem: Why is my ink/bubble jet transfer’s ink bleeding after printing it?

    Solution:

    • If bleeding occurs, the printer is producing too much ink. The t-shirt cannot absorb all the ink, which causes it to bleed.
    • Turn the shirt inside out and wash it in cold water.
    • If there is still bleeding repeat this process up to 2 more times.
    • If you still have ink bleeding wash the shirt again but add 1/3 cup of bleach.
    Mug Transfer Problems

    Problem: Why is the ink coming off the mug?

    Solution:

    • Put the mug in the glazing unit to set the ink.

    Problem: How do I get the wrinkles and bubbles out?

    Solution:

    • Squeegee the trapped air out from under the transfer.
    Laundering Garments That Have Printed Transfers

    Fading, cracking, or peeling transfer designs over time is a common problem. Correct laundering helps retain the design longer, if not indefinitely. The simplest solution is to wash items inside-out, in cold water.
